The Green Energy Award Winners 2024

Out of more than 100 entries submitted this year by companies, communities and individuals across the UK, 29 were shortlisted for their outstanding efforts.

Merlin Hyman, Regen chief executive, said: “The Green Energy Awards recognise the people and projects leading the UK’s transition to net zero energy. Decarbonising our energy system is a major challenge, but the inspiring achievements of all the nominees show what is achievable with the right framework.”

The winners in each of the six categories, chosen by a distinguished judging panel, were as follows:

Clean Energy Scheme Award Winner 2024

Bristol Heat Network

This award commends projects that are spearheading the clean energy industry and delivering significant carbon savings.

Vattenfall and Bristol City Leap’s Bristol Heat Network is a game-changing approach to city-scale decarbonisation, enabling private sector investment to deliver city-scale heat decarbonisation and committing to net zero by 2030. The live networks supplied over 20 GWh of heat last year to more than 2,000 homes and local businesses.

Community Energy Initiative Award Winner 2024

Bristol Energy Cooperative

This award recognises the role of inspiring community energy groups across the UK supporting the transition to a more democratic and decentralised energy system.

Bristol Energy Cooperative’s project with the Bristol Beacon is a rare example of a partnership between a community-owned renewable energy developer and a building contractor. Thanks to its community-funded approach, Bristol Energy Cooperative was able to install 348 solar panels on the roof of the Bristol Beacon – four times more than originally planned.

Net Zero Energy Developer Award Winner 2024

Octopus Energy

This award recognises the achievements of developers bringing forward the renewable electricity, heat and/or transport projects required to achieve net-zero energy.

Octopus Energy’s ground-breaking Zero Bills™ whole energy system solution incorporates a mix of low-carbon technologies, next-generation energy tariffs, energy efficiency measures to enable carbon and energy bill-free living for the first time ever. In partnership with 80+ developers Octopus Energy has created the biggest Zero Bills™ housing development as well as the first ever Zero Bills™ retrofit properties.

Net Zero Energy Pioneer Award Winner 2024

Angela Terry

This award recognises the achievements of the inspiring individuals making a real difference to the development of a net zero energy system.

As well as her leading work on community energy projects and the UK’s first local electricity discount scheme, Angela has found innovative ways to bring the net zero agenda into mainstream media, including her weekly ‘Going Green’ column and work with BAFTA. Angela has also established Climate Alliance CIC and volunteers for the Climate Change Coalition.

Public and Local Sector Net Zero Transformation Award Winner 2024

Dorset Council

This award recognises the crucial role the public and local sectors play in transforming the UKs energy system for a zero-carbon future, both through ambitious policy frameworks and inspiring projects.

Dorset Council’s Building Decarbonisation Programme focused on public sector buildings, residential properties as well as commercial units. It has retrofitted over 200 buildings with around 350 measures, provided £6.2million in grants to over 220 organisations and cut an estimated £195,600 from local household bills per year.

Whole Energy System Innovation Award Winner 2024

Electricity North West and Kelvatek

This award recognises the role of innovative technology, products and services in the development of the whole energy system for a zero-carbon future.

Electricity North West and Kelvatek have developed and installed 5,400 innovative monitoring devices on around 45% of its electricity distribution network. The monitoring system is an innovate platform that provides distributed intelligence and data capture, supporting the networks across the UK to ensure readiness for the accelerated rollout of electric low-carbon technologies.
